Steve Ernst

Massage Therapist

While massage therapy wasn’t Steve Ernst’s first career, it turned out to be the perfect fit for someone who’s always been passionate about helping people move better and feel their best. His early work in outdoor education and customer service took him from the waterfront to the wilderness, directing programs at a children’s summer camp.

With a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from the University of Western Ontario and a lifelong interest in movement, health and well-being, massage therapy became the ideal way to combine his experience and passion for helping others.

Education and Specialized Training

Steve completed his 2200-hour program at the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy in Kitchener, Ontario, passing his provincial board exams in 2005 before moving west to Calgary.

Since then, he’s pursued extensive continuing education, completing courses in the following:

  • Schweitzer’s deep tissue therapy (& was an Advanced level Teaching Assistant)
  • Hot stone therapy
  • Kinesio taping
  • TMJ (temporomandibular joint) work
  • Stretching techniques
  • Dry cupping

These advanced skills allow Steve to customize each session. You’ll never get a cookie-cutter massage here.

Deep Tissue and Sports Massage

Many clients seek Steve out specifically for deeper, sports-oriented work. “It’s definitely the real time ability to interact with people and help either cope with their pain or educate them.”  He is, of course, very happy to perform relaxation massage as well.

His approach goes beyond the treatment table (he loves sharing stretches and small adjustments that make a big difference at home). He provides recommendations and education so clients can continue their recovery between visits.

Two Decades at Active Back to Health

Steve joined Active Back to Health in 2005, now celebrating his 20th anniversary. “This place, it just, it really felt like a family when I started here.” He values the collaborative environment, regularly consulting with chiropractors, ‘past’ naturopaths, and other healthcare providers to ensure patients receive comprehensive care. Working alongside the same colleagues for years means he knows exactly who to recommend for specific needs.

Enjoying an Active Lifestyle

When he’s not in the clinic, Steve lives what he teaches. Depending on the season, he skis, cycles, paddles, and plays hockey or tennis  weekly. Calgary’s mountain access and extensive bike path network keep him outdoors year-round, which is exactly why he moved here in the first place.
