Back Pain Relief in Calgary

Woman with back pain

Unsurprisingly, back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek care, but it is also one of the most misunderstood. In many cases, pain develops from mechanical strain within the muscles, joints, and supporting structures of the spine rather than direct nerve involvement.

At Active Back to Health, the goal is not simply to label the problem, but to better understand the movement patterns, structural stress, and lifestyle factors that may be contributing to recurring pain.

How Mechanical Back Pain Develops

Mechanical back pain occurs when the spine and surrounding tissues are no longer handling load efficiently. Over time, postural strain, repetitive movement, muscular fatigue, previous injuries, and reduced spinal mobility can place increasing stress on the lower back. Eventually, even a relatively routine movement may trigger a painful flare-up.

Who May Be More Vulnerable

Back pain can affect anyone, but certain patterns may increase risk. These include prolonged sitting, physically demanding work, repetitive lifting, high-volume athletic training, or previous injuries that did not fully recover.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Localized low back pain or stiffness
  • Muscle spasm and tension
  • Pain that worsens with certain movements or positions
  • Symptoms that improve somewhat with gentle movement
Unlike nerve-related conditions, symptoms usually remain centred in the back rather than travelling into the legs.

When to Seek Care

If back pain is recurring, limiting your activity, or becoming more severe over time, a detailed assessment may help identify contributing mechanical factors.

Addressing movement and structural issues early may help reduce the likelihood of ongoing flare-ups and future episodes.

An Ultra-Marathon Runner Returns to Competition

We recently worked with a female ultra-marathon runner whose season was interrupted when severe low back pain forced her to withdraw from a 200-kilometre race at the 164-kilometre mark.

Her assessment included health history review, spinal mobility testing, posture evaluation, gait analysis, and CLA nerve scanning to assess nervous system function and identify movement-related stress patterns.

A major focus of her recovery involved coordinating treatment around her demanding training schedule and reinforcing the importance of consistent care.

Her multidisciplinary plan included chiropractic care to improve spinal mechanics, physiotherapy for stabilization and endurance training, massage therapy to reduce deep muscle tension, and acupuncture to support pain management and tissue recovery.

After six months of consistent care, the patient returned to ultra-marathon competition and successfully completed another 200-kilometre race pain-free.

What Care May Include at Active Back to Health

Back pain assessment begins with understanding which structures may be contributing to symptoms and why. This may involve health history review, movement evaluation, posture assessment, orthopedic testing, nerve scanning, and imaging where appropriate.

Depending on your presentation, care may include chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, and movement-based rehabilitation designed to improve spinal function and resilience.

Treatment plans are tailored to your daily demands, whether that involves sport, work, parenting, or simply moving more comfortably throughout the day.

Building Confidence in Your Recovery

Recurring back pain can gradually change the way you move, work, and participate in daily life. With a structured and collaborative approach, many patients are able to improve function, reduce flare-ups, and return to the activities that matter most.
