Whiplash Associated Disorder Recovery in Calgary
Motor vehicle accidents can place significant stress on the body, even when the collision initially seems minor. In many cases, symptoms do not fully appear until hours or even days later. At Active Back to Health, we take post-accident injuries seriously from the beginning because early assessment may help identify the structures involved and guide a more supportive recovery process.
What Happens During a Whiplash Injury
Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD) occurs when the neck is rapidly forced backward and forward during an acceleration-deceleration event, most commonly a motor vehicle collision.
This sudden movement can strain the muscles, joints, ligaments, and supporting tissues of the cervical spine. One of the most important aspects of whiplash injuries is that symptoms are often delayed. As inflammation and muscle guarding increase over the following days, pain and stiffness may become significantly worse.
Common Symptoms After an Accident
Whiplash symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the injury and the tissues involved. Common symptoms may include:
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Headaches beginning at the base of the skull
- Shoulder or upper back tension
- Jaw discomfort or reduced neck mobility
- Brain fog, dizziness, or visual sensitivity when concussion symptoms are present
When to Seek Care
If you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident, it’s important to seek assessment even if symptoms seem manageable at first.
Early evaluation may help establish a baseline, identify contributing injuries, and support recovery before symptoms intensify. If headaches, dizziness, visual changes, or cognitive symptoms are present, medical evaluation is especially important.
Helping a Patient Recover From Whiplash and Concussion Symptoms
We recently worked with a 56-year-old woman who presented to our clinic shortly after a motor vehicle accident. Along with neck pain, she was experiencing headaches, brain fog, and visual disturbances consistent with concussion-related symptoms.
Before beginning rehabilitative care, she was referred for medical clearance to rule out fractures and more serious injury.
Once cleared, her assessment included health history review, neurological evaluation, range of motion testing, posture assessment, and CLA nerve scanning to monitor nervous system stress and recovery.
The patient’s multidisciplinary care plan combined gentle chiropractic care, physiotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, and laser therapy. Physiotherapy focused on vestibular and stabilization exercises, while massage therapy addressed protective muscle tension following the accident.
Recovery progressed gradually, with expected fluctuations along the way. Over time, her headaches, brain fog, and mobility limitations improved significantly, allowing her to return to normal daily activities more comfortably.
What Care May Include at Active Back to Health
Post-accident assessments at our practice are designed to evaluate both cervical and neurological symptoms carefully and thoroughly. Depending on your presentation, this may involve movement testing, orthopedic assessment, posture evaluation, nerve scanning, and coordination with your physician when needed.
Care plans may include chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, and laser therapy where appropriate. Treatment is adjusted over time based on how symptoms and function change throughout recovery.
The goal is to support healing, improve movement, and help patients return to daily life with greater comfort and confidence.
Supporting a Thorough Recovery
Recovery after a motor vehicle accident can take time, especially when symptoms involve both the neck and nervous system. With a collaborative and carefully monitored approach, many patients are able to improve mobility, reduce symptoms, and regain confidence in everyday activities.
